I was wondering if someone knows a way to create a Local Area Network Without a Hard Disk in witch the computers can share a Internet conection. If this is posible or if you know something that can help me on the subject please write. Thank you in advance.

I suppose it's possible. On what type of device are you talking about lacking a HD? A LAN usually has a hub/switch/router, though you could just connect two computers with a crossover, and then boot from a live cd, that's technically a "LAN" I suppose.

What are you trying to do?

I already have a LAN with three computers connected through a switch that share an internet connection. But, my internet connection is established through a network card that connects to a static IP address. So you see the only way (that I know of) for me to share the internet connection is if the computer that serves the connection is always on. Having in mind that it will be on 24/7 I'm just trying to make it more power efficient. If you have a solution to my problem or you know a more efficient way to connect my computers please write.

Hi there,

You should consider router as an alternative, it's the best way for Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Good luck & Take care.

You used to be able to get network cards with boot ROMs on them. These chips were configurable with IP addresses etc so your machine would already know where to find the network.

However, have you though about how you are going to browse the web? You need a browser and it needs an operating system to run on. You are going to find it very difficult to load programs without a hard disk.

I think you should re-think your idea. There may be an alternative solution.

Hi
LAN without a hard disk means a computer is running without storage device.
As per IBM standard the following devices & parameters must be followed.
A Personnel Computer means the following architect is a standard
1. MICRO PROCESSORER (Min XT 8088) Other AT 286, 386, 486, Pant1, Pant2, Pant3, Pant4 Etc. from 4Mhz to 3.8 Ghz
2. ROM (BIOS)
3. RAM (Min 640 KB) Ext Memory 1GB
4. PEREPHERIALS INPUT / OUTPUT (Min Keyboard & VDU) Other Mouse Printer Etc.
5. EXTENSION SLOTS (Min 2 No 8 Bit ISA) Other VISA, VL-VISA, PCI etc.
6. DATA STORAGE DEVICE (Min FDD 1.2MB or 1.44 MB) Other HDD 10MB to 80GB
7. COMMUNICATION PORT (Min COM1, LPT1) Other COM2, LPT2, USB etc.
8. OPERATING SYSTEM (Min DOS 3.2) Other DOS 6.22 Win 3.1 to Win Vesta

Now come on the point, Without Operating System a PC cannot work so minimum requirement of OS is Disk Operating System is also known as DOS

For Operating System DOS 3.2 can work with only three Internal Command that is IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM is also Known as System Files and loaded in to the basic RAM at the time of BOOTING.

Now for LAN Operation you have to connect a LAN CARD/DEVICE Internal or External with proper LAN Driver with a Computer.

For INTERNET Sharing & operation you have to require an Internet Browser.

Therefore a storage device is necessary for installation of OS, Installation of LAN Driver and operation of Internet Browser etc.

Hope now you will understand the basic logic and PC operation.
Thanks
