Crossover Connection Problems

I have 2 computers, one is a acer laptop and the other is a desktop. i want to connect the computers without a router, and only using the crossover cable. After some hardwork the laptop establishes a connection however the desktop says local area connection is unplugged , i have turned off the firewall, assign a different i.p address still no luck. what i have noticed is that the laptop shows a light when the plug is plugged in but the desktop doesnt, does this mean that the ethernet adapter of the desktop is not working or something
PLEASE DO HELP ME

If you are using Windows, make sure that both computers are in the same workgroup, manually assign them each an IP address, and in a command prompt on each computer type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" and see if that fixes things.

Can you ping the PC through the loopback address (i.e. by entering the command "ping 127.0.0.1" on the PC)?
