Does MAC address necessary for packet delivery?

Hello all,
I am newbie in Networking. I have just started studying Networking.

I have a doubt

" Do every router/gateway determines physical address of other router or systems prior to the delivery of packets? If it is so then what is the need of IP address?"

Please help me to understand core networking concepts.

Thanx and regards,

Let me post a question to you: does your home router need to know the MAC address of your friend's computer in another country? Does your home router need to know where your InternetServiceProvider's router is located?

I don't think so. As per my networking knowledge, computer will know MAC address of it's router not of my friend's situated at foreign.

Right. So semantically, a router doesn't need to know ALL of the MAC addresses in the path to the other router, but it will need to know the MACs of the devices that are connected to it, on the side of your network.

Now, once it leaves your network, the routers don't even see the MAC addresses, they see the protocol wrapper (such as TCP/IP). Are you familiar with the OSI model? That will give you a really good idea of how packets are encapsulated and sent.
