How to fix a fluctuating high ping times

15 New Member
Here's the problem, the past 3 days in ANY game I play, on ANY server, the latency keeps jumping up and down. It changes harmoniously, not randomly. I mean every 4 seconds it jumps up then back down. Like it is 90 ms, and after 4 seconds it's 9000 ms, then after 4 seconds it's 90 again, then after 4 seconds it's 9000 again, and it keeps fluctuating exactly that way all the time. As you can imagine, I see other players jumping from one point to another instead of walking or running.
I have always been using the same DSL connection and same router for 2 years and this has never happened before until now.

I checked and made sure nothing else was using the connection, so that was ruled out.

I read on most forums the cliche answer that people get, "Disable your firewall", but same as with all my internet problems before, the firewall didn't turn out to be the culprit.

I can call my ISP, but it usually takes them 3 weeks to a month to get here, as they're always "too busy", and when they finally do send someone, it would be someone in a hurry who would tell me "your connection is fine".

Any known cures for this little problem(the ping problem I mean)?

How did you check nothing else was using the connection?

Have you done the whole 'manual connection reset' where you shutdown your computer, unplug your router, and power it down and back up, and then reconnect everything?

Have you made sure it's not your DNS/Nameservers?

If you're in the US, you can switch the one's that are provided to you with:
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2

Test that and see if it helps.

I'm not an advanced user, so I don't want to mess around too much with the internet settings and make it even worse.

That's the beauty of the windows setting - you can always wipe them out and start over.

If you open a command prompt (start->run->cmd) and type in 'ipconfig /all' you'll see the current network settings. What Niheel is trying to get you to do is tell your computer to, in the DNS settings section, try going to another server.

Especially if you have the output from ipconfig, you can always go back to what is currently there, messing with this won't hurt too much.

Try looking at this and see if it helps outline some of those concepts.

Then it's probably an issue with your provider. You might just have to go through the wait time and have them deal with it.

It happened to me recently turned out one of the routers on their side needed to be rebooted :).

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if you have resolved this issue seeing that it has been a week since your last post, but here are a few things to check. First have you tried pinging a server while you are NOT in a game. For example going to your command prompt and typing ping www.google.com and seeing if your responses are similar or not. Another thing to check is your CPU usage. Open your task manager and click on the performance tab. Go into your game and play for a few minutes and come back and see if your cpu usage spikes at the same time your ping spikes. If so you might have another issue

hello ! I would like to measure the time a user needs to connect to my website. In other words, to perform a ping between my website and the user's computer. I'm scratching my head as to how i can do that. Does anyone know a good way to make this happen? thanks a lot,

Hello, I want to have a php script which pings a host with ping 1.1.1.1 -t all the time and it shoukld write these things to a logfile. When it comes like "timout exceeded" it should write this only once to a file. Because if timout is 2000 times I don't want to have timeout exceeded 200 times in a database. But when ping times are coming they should be logged in a file with date and time when the ping accured.

Scenario: new functionality was recently deployed in a 3-tier business application. Since deployment, CPU use has shot up to very high levels. Using event monitors to try to track down the culprits hasn't fingered any bad query in particular who's hogging CPU. One interesting anomaly is that there is a single type of query that averages 70 seconds of real time (with highs of 100-300 seconds) while expending zero seconds of CPU. The...

I have come across a strange circumstance. I have user controls with dropdownlists that interact fine during times where the web server has minimal load. But once things pick up and postbacks take longer, my code behind will error out since I expect "ddlSample.SelectedItem.Value" to have a value for a control that exist. But sometimes it is set to "Nothing". I do think this comes about when the user is a 'quick clicker' and clicks...

Our company just allowed asp.net to be used internally here at my job. I am in the process of getting the software. My boss wants me to have some sort of way to capture load times in various places. I understand trace and how to turn it on but apparently this is not good enough. Is there anyway without writing my own code to do some sort of process time checking and just printing it to the screen but making them specific to different...

We have quite a few Nortel Baystack 450 switches. We are experiencing daily network outages and in the process of diagnosis I noticed that ping response times were slow. Response times pinging from inside the switch is 30-150ms. Pinging the switch's own IP address from inside the switch is 1-20ms. Pinging the switch from the a network server or workstation is 30-50ms. Pinging network devices other than the Nortel switches is 1-4 ms response so I...

I am in the process of exploring the possibility of providing our products on databases other than Oracle.I am able to migrate the data, procedures etc without too much effort (latest version of DB2 seems to have improved a lot compared to the earlier ones).* Unfortunately, I have limited knowledge of DB2, especially in setting the server parameters, their impact on an environment with high concurrency etc. As a result, we are getting very high...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies.
