I would recommend CompTia's A+ (hardware) and Network+ courses. Those will give you the basics. You can probably (if you don't want to purchse the course materials), find an outline of the courses online, and then google the individual points to learn about them. From there, I would recommend getting a hold of old equipment and creating your own network with webservers, file servers, proxys, firewalls, and learning how each part communicates with the others.

I believe the CompTia Network+ class is a single course. As I said before, I would recommend looking through the descriptions of those to get outlines (probably found by Googling "comptia a+ network+" or some variation), and then input each bullet point into Google as it appears on the outline. Or you could go to somewhere like Amazon.com and search for "A+ book" or "network+ book". CompTia puts out their own study guides for the courses, so you could buy one of those as well.

CompTia is the company that does both the A+ and Network+ certifications.

A+ is hardware, Network+ is networks.

The MCSE is actually a collection of 5 test evaluating Windows XP, Server 2003, i believe 2 sort of "general/your choice" classes, and a third I'm forgetting. However, completing all the courses will result in the 5 separate certifications and the MCSE cert. The MCSE is mostly Windows networking and device setup - how to create a domain, user management, device installing, troubleshooting , Windows tools and protocols, etc..., though that will also vary depending what other courses you take as your general electives.

The Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) course is full of useful information regarding networking and protocols. It's a little pricey for the materials, however, but if you pursue the courses you could learn quite a lot.

It's difficult to say. At some point you're going to have to do research here, so I'll let you google places you can take those tests on your own ;). It also depends if you want to go into a Microsoft shop and be an admin, or if you want to be a network engineer (which is usually either a consultant or router jockey). I think you're at the point where you need to look over the course materials yourself, and then compare them with the jobs you are going for, and see which ones you think you need.

As archnomagus said, the CCNA will cover some of the things that the Network+ course will as well, but also give you exposure to Cisco routers/switches/IOS. That is worth looking into as well.

Hi, I was going to buy a server with Raid 1 as I thought that it meant that if one of the two mirrored drives fail, you simply take it out and put a new one in. At which point presumably the hardware takes over and copies the other drive over to mirror it again. However, my sql server admin book, says raid 1 is bad, as it means you have lots of downtime, when recovering from a broken drive. Can anyone give me some advice on this? What...

Which is the better approach in working with Javascript? 1. Server side processing: Web server gets form input, runs it into the Javascript module, and PHP collects the output for document prep. 2. Client side processing: Web server gets form input and passes it to PHP which includes the Javascript written in a way to make the form input processed on the client side and rendered (probably using DOM function calls) on that side as...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
