intranet search not working

Hi
I am attempting to restore the search feature that was created by an external company using the indexing service for our intranet.
the intranet is located locally at each of our offices. The search isn't working on our 2 newest servers at 2 of our branches - Windows Standard 2008 sp2- using IIS 7. The search page is an aspx page. I have the indexing service indexing the intranet folder using mmc. If i go to indexing in the control panel it says it isn't running and the modify button is greyed out.
I have read while googling Server 2008 indexing doesn't work with IIS.
I may have misunderstood this as I have no experience with .aspx.
Any help would be much appreciated. I hope this makes sense.
