modified templates...

Hi all..
Every now and then we encounter .net application, desktop or web, that have a really pleasant look. They are designed using .net platform but the controls and functionality that are there are not to be found in the .net IDE.

for example i was looking at www.etihadairways.com which is designed in asp.net, but when i search for those controls in the visual web developer toolbar, they are not to be found. similarly there are several desktop application that are designed in vb.net using somewhat of a modified template.

what i am trying to ask is that how do we go about designing such applications. I just need a kick start towards that. Anyone who could point me towards that starting point is really appreciated.
