Naming of ampersands and other tricky characters

Is there a (preferably formally defined) name for the set of
characters that must be represented in XML by their entity references
? i.e. &, < etc. ?

I'm writing documentation at present and I keep having to use wooly
terms like "characters that are in XMLTR:Char but not in
XMLTR:CharData"
Thanks,

The best place to look is the http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/ XML 1.0
Recommendation. Those are general entities predefined in the XML 1.0
Recommendation, <http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#sec-predefined-ent>,
referred to as "Predefined Entities".
