XHTML calls info from XML

I have some information. It's verses from a buddhist religious text. I
want to save the verses in good old homemade XML tags. I want to write an
XHTML file with the schema (if that's the right word) to display the verses
in a web browser.

My question: How would one write or begin to write an XHTML page to do
that. I've already checked www.w3c.org and the info if I even found it was
to confusing to me the term "encode" was used. Can someone explain this to
me to get me started or point me to a w3c.org link that can help me?

Bill
