Computer not picking up archos

I have an archos 404, it has recently stopped working with my laptop,I plug
it in but the computer just does'nt find it. The battery on the archos no
longer works but the device works ok in the dvr.
Does any body have any idea why the laptop will no longer detect the archos,
I can live without battery but I am lost without the ability too transfer
from computer to archos.
Really appreciate any ideas, thankyou.

I have a similar problem on an Archos 504; it recharges from the USB port but
I cannot access the harddrive to put music on. Would welcome suggestions.
Thanks.

Hi Dave
I solved the problem by using an nokia n95 data cable. Put the archos in the
dvr and connect nokia cable to laptop and then small usb slot at side of
Archos dvr station, connects everytime. Hope this helps.
