Determine System Requirements

427 Expert 256MB
Hey guys,

After doing some googling i have found zero pages which could guide me on how to determine the system requirements for an application which i have developed.

How do i tell a customer the amount of RAM and processing power required to run my application? I'm sure a generic argument would be that if your machine can run WinXP (for example) it could run an application developed in .NET

But i would like a more concrete way of determining what my application requires.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Hello

System configuration depends on many factors some are the size of the application you have developed ,if its a web application ,the client should have a compatible browser and also make sure if any hard ware required for your project like external modems and readers.

Ultimately it depends on the type of project ,its difficult to say with out knowing the project requirement and scope.

Hey,

thanks for the post,

but i find it rather strange that in our world of computer science we dont have a formula or tool to standardize something like this.

As another newbie let me just ask if this thinking off base...

A 300kb application can still open 5,000 objects at 3megs each if that is what the application does.

So how can there be 'standard' formula for working this out?
Number of objects * size of objects + memory leaks = requirements?

For my own stuff I figure I have to put my application into the worst case condition a user can do to it just to make sure it doesn't break. While in that condition I look at Task Manager and see how much memory and CPU it using. So worst case plus 20% is the spec I claim.

Does that seem reasonable to the more experienced out there?

I believe that you may be asking the wrong question. If you were to tell me the requirements for your application and my client didn't fit, I'd be taking my business elsewhere.

Your lack of finding a scientific equation, I believe, shows the reality of doing business. You are better to assume specs at the lower end of the scale. This would fall under selling benefits - works on a "standard" machine.

Rather than work to an equation, most companies work to the researched environment of the customer. As a developer, I usually assume a proven standard unless requested otherwise. An analogy here is the security standard of working to least privilege. Good luck!
