Working with C# on Windows2000?

310 100+
Although I have much programming experience, I have never yet used C#, and only worked a little with .NET on my office XP machine.

Now I wish to learn C#, but at home I am still using Windows 2000. I found a tutorial site for C#, and started to follow their instructions in order to get their tutorials working, and the first step was to download a .NET platform from Microsoft. And when trying this I was given the error message that I first need to upgrade my OS to XP. I am not about to do that, as I am not going to spend any more money for an operating system for this PC which is now over 4 years old.

Is there any way to work with C# on Windows 2000? If so, can someone point out what I need? And here I am looking for open source / free software, as at this point I only want to begin to learn C# to see what it is all about.

Thanks!

Hi and thanks for the reply.

It sounds like you have Visual Studio 2003, which I assume is something one has to pay for. Is that correct? At the moment I just want to get something up and running so I can learn C#. This is for my own free-time education and so I am not willing to pay for any software. My budget is limited so I usually stick to open source for private, non-commercial things.

But I have found in the meantime something that works on my Win2K machine: I discovered and downloaded Mono for Windows, and that gives me what I need to get me started.

Once you work in this area no problem, but understand the prob. I did a programming course and ended up spending some money, albeit at educational prices (not full retail).

You should look at the express editions of Visual Studio, which are free. I suspect you tried to download the latest .net framework, try framework 1.1 first.

Windows 2000 is listed as no longer supported by Microsoft, so you will not be able to use the most recent .NET packages. However 1.0/1.1 and I think 2.0 can still be safely used on Windows2000.

As a personal note, I would recomend upgrading your OS soon, as no supposrt means no security fixes.

Hi all and thanks for the replies and tips!

Since yesterday I have been working a bit with Mono, just using the console compiler to get started on understanding the basic syntax. I wish to try looking at the Mono GTX# today, to start to understand how to make simple GUI controls. I do not know if Mono is the best for this, as I do not yet understand whether there is a basic difference in the end code if windows, buttons, etc. are created with Mono or with, for example, visual studio.

But Mono does seem to work fine with Windows, so far.

Regarding my older operating system at home: Yes, maybe it is time to migrate to XP, but unless (in the interest of people in my situation) Microsoft offers such an upgrade at a very very low price, I will wait until I get a new computer. My PC is working fine for what I use it for, and I do not wish to spend the money (and all the time for a reinstall of everything) for this older PC. I would buy an OEM OS anyway, with a newer PC, so it is not a question of purchasing XP now and being allowed to migrate it to a newer machine later.

Regarding using the free version of Visual Studio for .NET: Yes, I will indeed migrate to this on my office XP machine at some point, but I wish to learn C# first without all the extras that may come with .NET and the MS SDK environment.

$99 is not a low enough price?
Mircosoft is already trying hard to not do XP anymore (They like vista...nobody else seems to)

Yes, Plater, $99 is definitely too much for me to invest under the current circumstances. Everything otherwise works fine with the PC, I have a good (free) anti-virus software, and I am also thinking of the amount of time I would have to invest to do a re-install of all my softwares and games.

In win 2000 you can't use the lates framworks, go with 2.0 as someone alredy told:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

You can use the Visual studio Express thingys, that you find here:
http://www.microsoft.com/express/

An other option is:
