A folder can contain how many files maximum?

I have an ASP.NET page that randomly create new XML files to store temporary
data.

I would like to know what is the maximum number of files that a folder could
keep.

I've had upwards of 40k files in a folder before, one thing you need to be
careful of is trying to open the folder with that many files in it using
explorer. It tends to get extremely laggy if you try and view a folder with
that many files in it. Which is expected, after all it is trying to show you
40k entries in a listview.
