DES Encryption

I'm looking for a straight forward code example of using DES to encrypt a
simple string.

I'm having trouble finding a decent example. Everything I've found so far
is either for excrypting files, or doesn't use a key ( I dont understand haw
it can be called encryption without use of a key ).

Can you help?
