how do you know if any visual c++ application what type of monitor that
you have installed? vga svga xga wxga etc

how would you write the function?

You could use

GetSystemMetrics(SM_CXSCREEN)
GetSystemMetrics(SM_CYSCREEN)

to get the number of pixels on the primary monitor.
