Update Panel problem

I previously had the problem of getting scrollbars on my datagrid. Got the solution to use <div> tags, which worked fine, but each time i selected a record, the focus on the grid was lost and the position reset. the same with panel. got the solution to use an updatepanel. which works great. i dont loose focus on the grid. but now i cant get my postback to work like it used to. the setup is as follows: i have the datagrid inside the update panel. when i select a row, a method executes and the a few queries run and i bind a datagrid and a few labels outside the update panel. now before i used the update panel, it worked fine. with the panel i cant get the post back to work so nothing happens when i select a record...any help appreciated please.
