c# works on one pc not another

Ive been developing a program for a while nwo and am wanting to release the version ive been working on. now before i do i need to test on a few other machines than my own. So at my work we have a pc with vmwar eon thats helpful for testing.

so i ran it in release mode and then went and copied the needed files into another folder and transfered them to the other pc. I ran teh confgiuration setup just to make sure the database was available etc.

My application gets almost to the end and then fails on a certain page/process. Its the page which gathers the information. i thought it was odd how ti works on my devlopment pc and not on the vmware.

So i transfered it back just to make sure and it works fine from my pc. runs perfect. I managed to get an error from it ealier saying null refereance occured but i havent been able to reproduce this error nor find any others. Ive been sitting here doing try catchs 4 lines at a time trying to find it and ive not found anything wrong.

Its starting to get extremly frustrating now. Has anyone got any ideas what i can do to try get this working? or tips to debugging a problem like this?

To say the vmware session im installing on had a older version installed which worked fine.. so i dont think its a .net version error.


Any ideas before i go and find a sledge hammer lol ?

You got some error messages? Code snips? Call stacks? Anything concrete for us to help you with?

Do both the machines have the same version of .net?
Sometimes if you use a .net2.0 function in a .net1.1 environment you get funky results.

its only coded in 1.1 :) and yes there both the same .net version.

No, Im cant seem to get an error message. So the call stacks i presume you can only get if it errors? As for code, I cant find where it is and i dont really want to post that whole form. my collegue devlopers are back in today im going to see if they can help me. If i get anywhere ill post back some code or the solution.

Ok, i found the problem. I partially blame VS2003 but it was my fault in the first place. There was a line that checked the length of a string however there wasnt one check if ti was null. Thus, it was erroring there. i dont quite know why vs2003 didnt return and errors for this. Usually you would get an exception. It now works on both machines. I think the main reason why it didnt work on the other one is because the databases where different. So on my machine there was more data there, Less likely to fail. Where as the other machine had hardly any data.

Not sure why VS didnt help me.
