restore contact list

I am realy challenged by MSN Live. I was quite happy with my former hotmail.
The new forced-upon-me version has caused me nothing but headaches and lots
of work. It consumes huge amounts of my time and space in Hotmail. I can't
sort e-mails like I used to because it sorts ALL hotmail folders not just
the one I want. The MSN help folks responded that the sort feature I liked
and used extensively in the prior hotmail version is not in the "new &
improved version". This STINKS.

But, that's not my current nightmare. This is:
Because I was sick and tired of having to look at all 254 contacts to find
the one I wanted to e-mail (my former version of hotmail had a "favorites"
list that contained only a dozen of my most frequently e-mailed contacts), I
copied "ALL" contacts - MSN's new default display list - to a new folder.
The thought was that I would empty the ALL folder (which wouldn't be a
problem because I had just copied its contents into a new separate folder),
and then I would repopulate the "ALL" folder with my favorite 12 contacts
which would then give me a much smaller displayed list for everyday use.

Well, it seems that "ALL Contacts" is not a separate folder. No, it's a
consolidation list of every contact in every folder I have/had. So, when I
deleted its contents, every one of my 254 contacts in each and every
contact/group folder I had was erased. Clearly what I thought I was deleting
was far less than what was actually deleted. Why an all encompassing list
would be among specific, discrete FOLDERS is beyond me.

How can I get them back???? (Note; I obviously am not a techie, so any
response to "key a string" in will require simple instructions of exactly
where the command should be entered because the only input places I see are
the http address line and "search" boxes.

BTW. I am on XP with basic MSN Live, and cannot see any "advanced" category
in the OPTIONS.

Bless anyone who can help me. Thank you!
