>I got a Windows XP update yesterday and it 'failed' three times so far to
install - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.
Anyone knows what this is, why it won't install, or if I really need it?

Go to the MS download page, find the 1.1 Framework SP 1, donwload it, and
install it manually.

A friend also gave me a seven year old Dell 4100 running XP Pro. It
actually
dual boots to Win 2000 Pro also. That won't install Win XP SP 2 because
this
copy of the OS "may not be valid". C'mon, this machine's been sitting in a
garage for five years. I'm pretty sure it's a valid copy, as my friend's
father is absolutely, impeccably honest. Is there any way around this, or
do
I really need it?
If it is a valid/licensed copy of the O/S, then get on the phone with MS
with the O/S's product-key and have them register/activate it again. It's
free. You can also do the same thing over the Internet to do the
registration/activation, and it's free too. You'll also need the Windows
authentication software install on the machine that checks with MS to see if
there is a valid/registered/activated copy of the O/S on the machine, before
it will allow updates to be applied to the computer.

Since this is kind of a (donet) related issue the (.Net Framework), you
needed some help.
However, this is a (dotnet) programmer's NG, and where you should have
posted to is MS.Public.Windows.XP.General.
