problem open email attachments

I am having problems opening email attachments when I receive as a Notepad.
I have this problem in AOL or Outlook. When I open I get a box with letters,
symbols and numbers. I have been told as it is a PDF file I need to install
Adobe. I have succesfully installed and still cannot open. I have XP. Does
anyone know what I am doing wrong or how to correct?
