problems adding memory cards

When I try to add memory cards to my HP Pavillion a1130n desktop the computer
shuts down and reboots when switching programs or websites. What is going on
and how to I rectify this?

Those are symptoms of faulty memory and/or new memory modules that are
incompatible with pre-existing modules.
To discover the cause, get and run a good memory testing utility, like
MemTest86, here:

http://www.memtest86.com/

It will tell you if the memory has problems.

I hope you purchased the new memory from a vendor who will stand behind it.
Crucial, for example, guarantees compatibility if you buy their recommended
memory for a given computer model:

OTOH, if you purchased on a place like eBay, you'll likely be out the $$ if
the memory you got is incompatible.
