XP Home as simple WebServices server

Hi,

This is just a general question regarding the possibility of hosting a
webservice on my PC at home (Windows XP). I may upgrade to XP Professional so
I can get access to IIS. I was hoping I could maybe setup a web server under
IIS, and place my Web Service in there. Then I was hoping i could get a
static IP address using a freeware program such as No-Ip and then attempt to
access the webservice on my PC from a different location across the internet?
Is this possible?

Thanks for any suggestions,

David

That's what IIS is for a Web Server that host a Web service. It doesn't
matter if you use a static IP or a dynamic IP as long is you know the IP to
the machine or your network that hosting Web server.
At the very least, put the machine behind a NAT router, instead of exposing
the entire machine to the Internet.

On a side note, if you don't know how to secure the O/S, the registry, file
system, user accounts and IIS itself for a computer that's running a Web
server being exposed to the Internet, then you're just putting up a computer
and a Web site that's just hack bait and a jumping off point to attack
other networks and Web servers on the Internet, as the computer is
compromised by hackers.

IT professionals can hardly secure a Web server facing the Internet, let
alone some home user trying to do it with no expertise.

Definately possible and very easy to do. Check out www.zoneedit.com, free
domain redirection. You just need a DNS update client (i.e. DirectUpdate is
very good).
Or check out www.crystaltech.com - 2.95 a month for a developer account,
and you don't need to worry about the security hassles of hosting your own
software. CrystalTech has very good support.

By default CT runs in medium trust - so calls that require a lot of
permissions may not run. If you need full trust, I believe CT has a special
server for that (provided you sign off on security issues ;-).

Thanks for the info, I'll check out the NAT router option.

Cheers

Cool, I'll check out crystaltech.com. The last .net host I used just seemed
to have stopped working, no reply from support, and no support forum anymore.
Luckily it only cost $5 for a year and it worked for a year. So, I was doing
some googling looking for a decent host, thought Discount ASP looked pretty
good. But there a bit pricier that CT so i'll have a look at them. Still
wanna try hosting my own tho, just for fun.

cheers

I think if you google CrystalTech you'll find nothing but positive reviews
:-)
