C# -- Scan network for running service

I have used client-server software where a server program is installed on one computer and the client application is installed on another. When installing the client, it is able to automatically detect the running server.

Now, I am developing a similar application. How do I search for a running service on a network using c#? Any code samples or helpful articles? I find similar articles, but nothing that's a perfect match.

Remember, this has to be completely automated without any user input or prior knowledge of network domains or administrator credentials.

Thanks in advance

You would have to just put a loop in your application that opens up ports and sends a packet out to see if it gets a response. If it does then you have a service there. Look up port scanning and protocol mapping.
