XP won't start computer

I have xp home edition on my computer (have had for some time) and it has
always worked fine. A couple of weeks ago I tired starting this computer and
it would not boot. It told me that the root/system32/hal.dll file was
missing and to reinstall that file.

I have my disc, but do not know how to get this file from my disc to the
correct place on my computer so it will boot correctly.

Can anyone help?

You are in the wrong newsgroup.

This is for programmers/developers who use the DotNet framework to
write/author software.

I think something with "windows" in the name will serve you better.
