will putting xp on hd with vista help me?

Hi,

Problem - After upgrading to new computer (with vista pre-installed), I
cannot get our satellite broadband connection going because the modem is not
compatible with vista!

Several frustrating calls to our large-multinational ISP were useless. No
support.

I have been told to use the old computer (with XP on it ) as a gateway. Cant
do that because the HDD is corrupted or damaged.

I have my original XP cd, so my question is can i install xp onto the new
computer alongside Vista and get the internet connection going?

The modem is a DW4000 connected by USB.

Any help would be great thanks.

This is a .NET programming forum, not a windows support forum.

Re the question, you can probably dual-boot to a second OS, but you
can't run them both at the same time (short of virtualization, which
wouldn't be a good idea here).

Perhaps see if you can buy a suitable router from somewhere? This
should allow any computer to connect (over a network cable to the
router), independent of the OS.

Thanks Marc,

apologies for putting this in the wrong place!
I will make some inquiries about routers, but I am not sure if that will
work, because vista wont recognise the satellite driver software.
Anyway thanks and I will repost this in a more suitable location.

The point is that a router is *separate* to the PC, so PC doesn't even
need to know what the type of connection is. A router essentially
replaces the modem. I note, however, that satellite modems seem to
have a daft price tag, so this might not be a feasible option. Perhaps
the best approch might be to repair the old xp box, or replace with a
junker second-hand just to act as the gateway. Not great, and not
trivial to implement.

The real answer is for the hardware manufacturer to provide a vista
driver.

Best of luck.

Thanks marc,
I am in the process of trying to repair the old pc, having some hard disk
problems (damaged and corrupted messages), so buying an old clunker might be
the go.

As for the hardware manufacturer to provide a Vista driver..... this is
telstra we are talking about.
