msconfig access denied

Yeaterday, I got a box stating that my computer is making unauthorized copies
of my system and do I want to download spyware remover. I click the No
button and this obnoxious box keeps coming back. I located a .exe using
msconfig that should not be and I believe it is what is causing the problem.
However, when I tried to remove it, I get the message that access is denied
and I will need to logon as administrator. I then noticed that I had lost
regedit, control file and task manager.

I am the only user on this home computer with no network, so I have always
been the administrator as far as I know.

???? Then download an anti-virus/anti-spam piece of software.

This is like saying "I'm really sick, but I don't want to go to the
doctor.".

Thanks, Scott. Before I wrote this message, I updated my multiple
anti-virus/anti-spam softwares and ran them, but the problem still persisted.
After I wrote this message, I updated my multiple anti-virus/anti-spam
softwares again (the next day) and ran them again. This time the problem was
resolved. Could it be that this was a worm that the anti-virus/anti-spam
softwares had not detected when I first ran them? Maybe this is why they let
in the worm in the first place.

New viruses are devised all the time and you need to have the most up to
date virus definition files for your anti-virus software to know about the
new ones. It is possilble that the first time you scanned, your software
hadn't updtaed it virus definition file yet.
