datagrid master-detail filtering

I have a vb.net windows form application that has two datagrids on it that have a master - detail relationship. The underlying database is an sql database. The application works fine when I first load the application and query all records. My question is how can I add filtering too my master grid? I would like the user to be able to filter records in the master table and keep the relationship with the detail table. If I use a dataview to do the filtering then I lose the reltionship between the two tables. Any help would be much appreciated.
