Restoring deleted files

Help, help, help. My friend wiped out a spreadsheet, and then saved it
blank somehow (unless the computer did it, which I doubt). I don't know how
to access the History, to find an earlier saved version. Can I do this? I
tried system restore (ofcourse, no luck), and it's not in the recycling bin
and restore.....it's gone, daddy, gone. Please reply. Thank you.

If they come in from "discussions.microsoft.com", they don't see the group
name. It
shows "description" (and I use the term very lightly) for most of the
groups. For
example, the ones that end in .general say "General Discussion", but they
don't
say what the general discussion is about. My guess is that the first one is
our group,
which explains all of the extraneous posts.
