opening a word document using webdav from a web app

Hi,

I have a web application and I would like to serve the user a word document
and have word open it up using webdav.

I have read kb 838028 about office protocol discovery, but this only seems
to happen when the document is opened from inside office; if I just put a
hyperlink to the word document in a web page, it seems to generate be a
single HTTP GET (which is presumably IE downloading the file and it then
gets word to open it up from the temporary internet files directory), so the
office protocol discovery never seems to happen.

Sharepoint offers exactly the functionality i need, but it seems to be using
frontpage server extensions and not webdav

any ideas?

Andy
