Using data from a form control as part of a subform control calcul

I have a form and a subform. The relationship is a 'one' in the form to the
'many' in the subform. There is a control in the form that has text that I
need to use in a subform comparison. Whenever I refer to that data I get an
error that says that I cannot get data from a control that does not have the
focus. I have been able to get the data when I use VB to set the focus on the
control in the form. But that is messy and I should be able to either get to
the data in the field within the underlying record or directly transfer the
data from the form into a procedure initiated by a control in the subform. I
get a run-time error 2185. Please help. This is critical to my project.
