Timer in Webserver

Now iam working in a asp.net(c#) project . My project needs a timer that periodically checks the the table in a certain time periode and update data in to the database .Client side is programmed to postback in each 30 seconds. First i think that check and update database in each post back .But when table grows it will affect the post back time and also affect the perfomance . i want to update the tables periodically in so that client side post needs only checking the data . how to do this? help me.......
