how to get a value from datagrid

i am new in .net
currently using vb.net as programming language
i work with datagrid to display so information
but the question is

---> how to i get back a value from a particular column from the grid
i try Dim str As String = e.Item.Cells(1).Text() and other like
e.Item.Cells(1).FindControl("PartName")

but all return ""

can anybody please my

You will have to Set the Active Row to fetch the value from particular column of that row.
