Timing issue when sending data in embeded application via RS-232

I whant to make an embedded application in wich i must send from a device via RS-232 some information. I make an .Net application in C# that saves the data received via RS-232. My problem is that if I don`t insert some delay after the transmit function in the embedded sistem the .net application loose data and if i insert a delay such as 4ms the .net application works fine.
The time is critical for my applicaiton and if someone can tell me how to solve this problem?
