XmlSerializer and Serialization Surrogate

In the past when doing binary serialization I have been able to implement my
own serialization for a type by defining a serialization surrogate for this
type.

I am now working on something different and want to be able to do a similar
thing when performing XML serialization but looking at the XmlSerializer I
see there is no SurrogateSelector property.

Is it possible to use serialization surrogates with XML serialization and if
so, how?

TIA
