Replacing manually-performed replication with xml-based service

My organization has several locations downloading/uploading financial
transactions from a central location, to/from several places in the world
every day. It's a labor-intensive effort for the worldwide locations to
upload/download their data every day and I'd like to replace with a service.
I think that the data could be serialized, then passed back and forth in
SOAP messages. The locations could be scheduled to contact the central
server. Is this a job for XML web services? Please point me in the right
direction.
