2GB Limit?

My understanding is that strings and xml documents are limited to 2GB. Not
that this is a good practice, but I have a client that wants to parse /
convert (in memory) a document that is larger than 2GB. I don't think it can
be done even with XP or Vista 64. Am I correct? I assume that I can read
from a file that is larger than 2GB with a stream but I will need to read,
convert and write using much smaller chuncks of data.

Comments?

Thanks,

The XML Specification does not limit the size of a document or the
length of any strings which it may contain.

Your software or processing environment may have other limitations.
If these are too small, you need to change to different software.

Hi Andrew,

A process can only use up to 2GB memoery on a 32 bit operating system. In
this case, you cannot load an xml file larger than 2GB into memory using
XmlDocument. In this case, I suggest you use XmlTextReader. As far as I
know, in .NET framework 1.1, it has a 2GB limit also. However, in 2.0 this
limit was fixed and no longer exists.
