Reference changes at runtime

I have VS2003 project I have been running for some time now. Recently
when I do a build, it changes 2 of my references to older versions of
the assembly. Is there some way to prevent this from happening? I
need to keep the older references for other projects, and I have been
running this config for almost a year now without problems.

Are the old references in the GAC but the new ones not?

Both new and old references are in the GAC.
