Windows Installer problem that refuses to go away...Help!!

After running a few updates I get this very annoying "Windows Installer" error #1706 that will ne go away! It keeps saying that it cannot find the file "instantsharedevices.msi", that it is on another CD, and gets caught in a loop when I try to delete it! It mentions MS.net frame error # 1706. The "details" code follows...hope someone can help me to either fix it or get out of the loop! I tried running "Windows Registry Repair Pro"...but no help there! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

  1. Windows Installer Error 1706
  2. No valid source could be found for product [2].
  3.
  4. Where "2" is the name of the program attempting to install/repair.
  5.
  6. If you installed your software from CD, you will need to provide the CD in order for the action to complete. If you installed your software from a network drive letter, make sure the drive is mapped again.
  7.
  8. To locate the area the software is attempting to look. Check the following registry subkey:
  9.
  10. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
  11.
  12. In here you will see several subkeys with long hexadecimal strings for names.
  13. These represent various Windows Installer applications installed on your
  14. system. Use the "find" feature or look in each until you find the one with a
  15. "DisplayName" value that matches that of your software (denoted in the error
  16. message as the number two). There are several values that control how the
  17. repair or removal of the software should be performed. Look for the
  18. "InstallSource" value- this is the location being checked for the applications
  19. installation files.
  20.
  21. This error is normally seen after an application is already installed. When you
  22. run the program using the shortcut created by the installation, Windows
  23. Installer first checks to ensure all the files deemed important to the program
  24. are present and available. If one of these files is missing, or even corrupt,
  25. Windows Installer will attempt to go to the installation source (by default this is
  26. where it was initially installed from) and restore the files with fresh coppies.
  27.
  28. Some common causes:
  29.
  30. - a file has been deleted
  31. - another program was installed that removed or replaced a file needed by the application
  32. - another program was uninstalled and removed files needed by your application.
  33. - security limitations that do not allow the system to see that a required file is present.
  34.
  35. Look to your logs for more detail on just what file has been deemed unavailable:
  36.
  37. 1) Check the Application Log in Event Viewer (eventvwr.exe).
  38.
  39. 2) See our tip on turning on Windows Installer logging here. Once logging is
  40. enabled, attempt to launch the program again and look in your %TEMP% folder
  41. for the installer log file. You will see the path and filename for the problem file
  42. here (search for "ERROR").

InstantShareDevices.msi SOLUTION:

Same thing happened to me; it appears this is a vestige of some ancient HP feature that I've actually never used nor have any particular attachment to. I haven't found any surefire tips on the web, but here's what I did:

Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs

I removed this program called "HP Photosmart Premier..." or to that effect. I believe this program is part of a software bundle associated with my flat scanner/printer that used to work. Keep in mind, I don't use this program and I don't see any good reason to keep it on this system while this stupid loop prevents even a proper restart/shutdown of my system. I am not a tech and I'm not advising anything. This just worked for me. If you feel you don't need this program, removing it properly might just do the trick. In my opinion, GOOD RIDDANCE.

Back up your files and perform this at your own risk. Cheers.
