you can use the same API calls as in VB6, just keep in mind that VB6 LONG datatype is a simple INTEGER in .Net:

    Dim n As Long
    Dim Buffer$, t$
 
    Buffer$ = Space$(200)

       GetKey = Trim$(Left$(Buffer$, n))
