tabs in query string

I am populating a droplist box with a query and want the two pieces of info
in the box to appear as columns. The following query is being used:

select dsm_code + char(9) + dsm_desc as descCode from tbldsm_code

It seems that the tab is not being recognized in this query because the
information is not columnized but only has a space between dsmcode and
dsmdesc. Thank you for your wisdom
