Web service with separated elaboration

Hi everyone,
I think I need some advice from experts.
I am going to expose a web service. This web service needs to response
as soon as possible, because the application that calls it just request
for an ack to go on. So the web service takes the input, responds and
starts a separate elaboration (that can be relatively long). There are
several consecutive calls to the service.
The question is: how to separate this elaboration?
I thought about an asynchronous call to the web service, but this means
the elaboration runs undes IIS. If the caller is too fast I think that
IIS could be stressed.
An other solution could be start a new process. Hovewer I need a master
process to avoid too many processes in execution.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Gionni
