webservices and asp.net forms authentication

I'm trying to make a few webservices that I'm going to consume from a
webpage using the XMLHttpRequest object. Since both the webservices and
the webpages are in the same application I've used asp.net forms
authentication so users that are not logged in to my site can't use the
webservices. This works fine but when I make a unauthorized request to a
webservice the response is my login page. Is there a way to not get
redirected like this? I would rather just get a different http status
code since that would make more sense when I consume the services. I
know that I can change the StatusCode of the response but is there a way
to make this consistent for all services in a directory or am I going
about this the wrong way?
