web services fails on server other than the iis

When developing web services, I have to add a web reference to the
service that resides on my local machine. All fine and good, and when I
deploy the site, as long as the service remains on the iis server,
everything works hunky dory.
However, I wish to place all my web services on a dedicated server
(other than the iis server), and for some reason, my web page is unable
to access that server. There is no error - just a deafening silence -
any ideas ?

help !
