Web service Security questions

I have been tasked with securing data transmission between a windows app and
a series of web services. this should include data encryption

The task is a bit out of my depth and I'm unsure about what the best
approach might be.

If someone out there might be willing to walk me through the beginning
stages of what I need to do, it will be greatly appreciated.

TIA
