'Back' button becomes grayed

I'm developing a Visual Studio 2005 '.net' application with ASPX files. When
I run the application the main page opens another URL of our intranet onto
the same page. This all works great until I go back and forth a few times
and then the IE 'back' button becomes grayed on the subpage. At that point
the user can never get back to the initial startup ASPX page unless they
close and re-open the application.

How does the 'back' button lose track of its navigation path? And how can I
prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

Tom
