Quickwatch failure in studio

I have a solution in which quickwatch totally fails to allow me to see
the detail nodes of a complex object.

The Item lists as

ItemName | {ItemType}

but the expandability is screwed

so I cannot drill down
Any Clues anyone

Apparently there is an issue if you have any projects in your solution
where there is no compilable code.

Just add a dummy class and recompile and all will be well
