Data List and Label Control

I have a problem where when I click on a checkbox in a datagrid, I want
to get the associated label value. here is the code.

foreach (DataListItem item in dlCategory.Items)
{
bool isChecked = ((CheckBox)item.FindControl("chkSelection")).Check ed;

if (isChecked)
{
//THIS LINE WORKS AND I CAN HIGHLIGHT THE LABEL
((Label)item.FindControl("Label2")).BackColor = Color.Cyan;
//I CAN EVEN SET THE LABEL TEXT IF I WANTED TO
//((Label)item.FindControl("Label2")).Text = "New Text";
//THIS LINE HOWEVER DOESN'T SEEM TO READ THE TEXT FROM THE LABEL
Response.Write(((Label)item.FindControl("Label2")) .Text);
}
}

I can even set the text value of the label, but not read it. I'm
calling this routine when I click the checkbox, and so auto postback is
set to true.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
