Detecting SSL for web services

Is there any way to programmatically detect, from the client side,
whether communication over a web service is encrypted at the transport
layer via SSL? I'd like to provide the users of my application with a
lock icon similar to that in web browsers when the web service
connection is encrypted. I'd also like to display the level of
encryption (40/128-bit) if possible.
Thanks,
Nate Kohari
