Performance testing distributed enterprise application

Hi, I am doing some research on performance testing a distributed .net
application at the Microsoft performance labs. This is a "n" tier
application that will be centrally deployed with about 1000 clients
connecting over a WAN.
I have been trying to gather information on best practices used to
deploy .net applications in areas of importance (component architecture,
caching, fault tolerance, load balancing) and have not been able to come
across any directly related material.
Can someone offer any suggestions.

Thanks
Dilan
