Web user control problem

Hi all

Ive been tearing my hair out over this for the last couple of days and just
cant get it sorted so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a single asp.net page that simply has a placeholder on it this page
loads a control that has placeholders on it into which are injected user
controls depending on a database table

one of these controls is a menu that contains a drop down list box with a
series of categories in it, when the user makes a selection from the
category the menu is supposed to redirect the user whether or not the
selected category has subcategorys.

The problem is that although the dropdown list has viewstate enabled and
returns with the correct selection the selected item from the list defaults
to the first item in the list, also as the page is reloading the conrol on
each round trip i cant check the postback to get the value from the control.

i think ive tried everything that i can think of includeing using the
dropdownlists selectedindexchanged property to set some labels on the module
to the required values and then have tried checking those in the code behind
but even that does not seem to work.

Any help would be appreciated as im going slowly mad here
